What is Hyperpigmentation?

Dark, uneven spots on the skin are known as hyperpigmentation. Also known as sunspots and age spots, hyperpigmentation can give your skin tone an uneven appearance.

While many develop this type of pigmentation on the face, other common places are on the arms and legs. However, any part of the body that is frequently exposed to sunlight can be affected by this skin condition. Typically, those with dark skin are more likely to have hyperpigmentation – this is due to the fact that the pigmentation in skin is much stronger in dark skin compared to light skin.

What are the Main Causes of Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is the result of your melanin levels (natural pigment levels) increasing. There are several factors that cause your melanin levels to increase, which include:

Sun Exposure

This is the most common cause of hyperpigmentation. Sunlight is known to directly cause melanin to produce higher amounts than usual. While this can make your skin tan, it can also cause those unwanted dark patches to appear. Hyperpigmentation on the face is frequently caused by sun exposure.

Hyperpigmentation is more common in women than men, which is due to specific hormones. Estrogen and progesterone, two female sex hormones, are known to cause increased levels of melanin in our bodies when mixed with sun exposure. When hyperpigmentation occurs as a result of hormones, it’s known as melasma or chloasma.

The cells that produce melanin become larger as we age, resulting in increased dark spots on our skin, especially after the age of 40.

Injuries often lead to scars, which can produce skin discoloration.

Acne is known to leave dark spots on the skin, even after the acne has gone away.

Some individuals are predisposed to hyperpigmentation of the skin due to their family history.

Hormonal medications, chemotherapy, anti-seizure medications, and specific antibiotics can cause hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation is known to be caused by specific autoimmune diseases, gastrointestinal issues, and even vitamin deficiencies.

How do you know if you have hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation appears as freckles, sunspots, or age spots on the skin. It’s especially common on the arms, legs, and face, but can occur anywhere your body is frequently exposed to sunlight. If you notice these dark, uneven spots on your skin at SOC Med Spa, we can evaluate your skin and perform a recommended course of treatment to treat these spots.

How long does it take hyperpigmentation to fade?

In some cases, the dark patches on your skin can fade on their own, but this can take anywhere from 3 months to 2 years or longer. The length of time tends to depend on the contrast of color between your natural skin tone and the color of the hyperpigmentation.

How can I prevent hyperpigmentation?

Protecting your skin from the sun is one of the best ways to prevent skin hyperpigmentation. Wearing a hat and covering your arms and legs with protective clothing or wearing SPF sunscreen are all effective ways to reduce your exposure to the sun.

How to Treat Hyperpigmentation

What to Expect

Before Your Appointment

You’ll want to avoid specific activities and medications prior to your SOC Med Spa appointment. Your provider will discuss these items with you, including avoiding direct sunlight, tanning beds, ibuprofen, Retinols, and chemical peels.

During Your Appointment

Your SOC Med Spa provider will create a treatment plan that is customized for your needs. They will evaluate your skin and highlight any hyperpigmentation areas that will need to be treated.

After your skin is cleansed, our IPL will then send gentle pulses of light onto your skin to restore your skin tone to its natural color.

Our IPL treatment takes no more than 30 minutes.

After Your Appointment

For the best results, we recommend receiving multiple IPL sessions. Most patients receive 3 to 6 treatments, spaced one month apart. There might be slight sensitivity in the areas of skin where IPL treatment was administered – this will go away within a few days following treatment.
