What is IPL Laser Treatment?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacial is a light treatment that targets pigment issues, such as brown spots, sun damage skin, red spots such as Rosacea, spider veins and even unwanted hair. This skin treatment is an ideal solution for a bright and even skin tone.
What is an IPL Laser Used For?
- Age spots
- Sun damaged skin
- Spider veins
What are the Benefits of IPL Treatment?
IPL treatment offers multiple benefits for your skin, including:
- Reducing sunspots and dark spots on your skin
- Reduce red capillaries like Rosacea
- Providing you with a rejuvenated, refreshed appearance
- Brighter and healthier skin tone
How Does IPL work?
IPL Photofacial is Intense Pulsed Light effectively targets pigment producing cells below the surface of the skin. The light energy is converted to heat energy and destroys the hyperactive melanin producing cells in the dermal layers of your skin, eventually dispersing pigmented areas. The spots are pulled to the surface, eventually turning into a coffee-ground-like texture that eventually flakes off revealing beautiful, radiant skin beneath. The light treatment can be performed on the face, hands, neck, chest, and legs. Though light works to prevent the hair follicles from growing new hair, it’s generally considered less effective at hair removal than lasers.
Is IPL Laser Safe?
Yes, IPL treatment is considered very safe. However, there are specific people who should avoid this procedure, specifically, those who have a sensitivity to light, frequently use tanning beds or creams, use a retinoid cream, are pregnant, have very dark skin, or have skin cancer (or another skin disorder).
What is the Difference Between IPL and Laser Treatment?
This type of treatment might sound similar to laser therapy, but it’s quite different. While laser therapy uses one intensified wavelength of light, IPL releases multiple wavelengths of light and penetrates to the second layer of your skin (known as your dermis layer) without causing harm to your top layer.
What is the Side Effect of IPL?
While considered to be a very safe and effective treatment with minimal side effects, in rare cases, some patients might experience bruising, blistering, infection, or a change in skin color. Most patients who receive IPL treatment do not experience any side effects.
What do I expect from IPL treatment?
Your skin may be red and swollen for a few hours or the rest of the day, but you should be able to go back to your regular activities or work. Your skin may feel sunburned and hypersensitive for a couple of days following, so avoid sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or greater on the treatment area at all times. One to seven days post-treatment, pigmented spots will appear to rise to the surface of your skin, the brown, freckled areas can look like coffee grounds, before fading a few days to a week later.
Is IPL Good for Skin?
Yes, IPL is considered an effective and safe option for treating unwanted blemishes, wrinkles, and hair because the light wavelengths directly penetrate the second layer of your skin, without causing any harm to your top layer.
Who is a Candidate for IPL Treatment?
Those with a higher Fitzpatrick score, with a tan and melasma are not good candidates. Because the light rays are attracted to pigment, darker skin tones can actually become discolored and melasma patches can become darker. Those who are on antibiotics or Accutane should not receive the treatment until 6 months after the last treatment. During your consultation, you should let your SOC Med Spa provider know if you are pregnant, have a skin condition, or if you are taking any medications.
How Long Does it Take to Recover From IPL Laser?
Recovery from IPL treatment is fast. Patients can return to work the same day as their treatment.
How Long Do IPL Results Last?
IPL treatment typically requires multiple treatments to achieve full results. Patients often see some improvement in redness within two weeks of their first session, but it may take three to six treatments to see significant results, particularly for more severe dark spots. Maintenance treatment is required to continue long-term results. Your SOC Med Spa provider will give you specific instructions on how to care for your skin following treatment to obtain the best long-term results.
How Much Does IPL Treatment Cost?
The cost will depend on the specific areas of skin being treated and the number of sessions required to obtain the desired results.
What to Expect
Before Your Appointment
You’ll want to avoid specific activities and medications prior to your SOC Med Spa appointment. Your provider will discuss these items with you, including avoiding direct sunlight, tanning beds, waxing, Retinols, and chemical peels.
During Your Appointment
Your SOC Med Spa provider will create a treatment plan that is customized for your needs. They will evaluate your skin and highlight any areas that will need to be treated.
Your skin will be cleansed and then an ultrasound gel applied. Both you and your provider will wear protective eyewear. The IPL device will be held and moved against your skin, and the light pulses will be emitted with the trigger of a button. Some people describe the sensation as the snapping of rubber bands. The length of treatment depends on the size of the area, but it typically lasts 30 minutes. After the treatment area has been covered, the gel is removed, and sunscreen is applied
After Your Appointment
For the best results, we recommend receiving multiple IPL sessions. Most patients receive 3 to 6 treatments, spaced one month apart. There might be slight sensitivity in the areas of skin where IPL treatment was administered – this will subside within a few days following treatment.
